Abbey Asher

Abbey is a formally trained ballet and jazz dancer who performed professionally in Santa Barbara. She began studying Iyengar yoga in 1995 and completed teacher training in 2004. Abbey has been a student of Maya Lev and Kofi Busia for many years and is currently teaching yoga at UCSC. In January of 2008, Abbey studied for one month at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India.

Laurie Broderick-Burr

has a B.A in Dance, a certificate to teach at the college level and is a certified massage practitioner. She has been teaching dance, yoga and fitness in Santa Cruz since 1984, and is currently on the faculty of Cabrillo College. She has studied yoga extensively with Judith Lasater and is currently studying with Kofi Busia.

Kofi Busia

Kofi is one of the few teachers awarded a senior certificate by Mr. Iyengar. He has studied with BKS Iyengar many times in India and has been teaching yoga for over 35 years. He is also a scholar of Sanskrit and has translated the Sutras of Patanjali from the original.

Juliet Heizman

Juliet has been studying Iyengar yoga since 1984, and is certified by the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She studied 4 years and apprenticed for 2 years with Judith Lasater, Ph.D., registered physical therapist. Juliet has been teaching since 1987.

Maya Lev

Maya Lev is the Director of Yoga Center Santa Cruz. In her first year at UCSC, Maya was inspired by her first Iyengar instructor, Sarah Pepper. She later became a student of Ruth Hille, one of the founders of Yoga Center Santa Cruz, who encouraged her to consider teaching. Maya began teaching at YCSC in 1993, and became the owner/director in 1994 when Ruth moved to Michigan. She feels deeply grateful to Kofi Busia, her primary teacher for the past 15 years. Maya also holds a MA in Counseling Psychology from CIIS in San Francisco, and has a private practice as a licensed Marriage Family Therapist. Most recently Maya welcomed the arrival of her second child, a beautiful baby girl born in Sept. 2009, to join her five year old son and make him a wonderful big brother.

Tamara Lewis

Tamara has studied yoga since childhood, and has been teaching since 2003. She is a certified TriYoga teacher and a student of Iyengar yoga with Maya Lev. Her teaching is rooted in TriYoga, informed by Iyengar alignment principles, and influenced by Vinyasa Flow, Integral and YinYang yoga. Lucy Martin

Lucy began studying Iyengar Yoga in 1986 and began teaching in 1995 after graduating from the Teacher Training Program of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She received Intermediate Junior 1 Certification from the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the US in 2006. She has studied with the Iyengar family in Pune. Sonya Padron

Sonya’s yoga studies began with the gentle svaroopa style of yoga in 2001. After moving to California, she began studying in the tradition of B.K.S Iyengar with Juliet Heizman in Santa Cruz and assisting Naomi Reynolds in San Jose. Sonya is completing her student teaching requirement to graduate from the 500-hour Advanced Studies/Teacher Training Program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco.

Kate Robbins

Kate Robbins teaches a warm yet precise class with yoga as therapy in mind. She has studied with Kofi Busia for 8 years and completed his extensive Yoga Teacher Training in 2004. Her teaching has been greatly influenced by him as well as her many other inspirations including Thai massage, mothering, singing, and Awareness Practice. She emphasizes the breath as the gateway to exploring the mind and body.

Mitra Tredway

Mitra Tredway is a certified yoga instructor and certified fitness specialist. As a teenager she practiced the Ovaicy system of Sufism. She began studying yoga at the age of 17 and has been studying and teaching yoga for 30 years. She has studied with many master teachers and combines with gratitude many forms to create her own personal practice and style in the class. Mitra is currently teaching Yoga in Santa Cruz, CA, and Auroville, India. She conducts classes in a teacher training in Graz, Austria, and offers retreats in Albuquerque, NM, and Troncones, Mexico.
